What does 7-Panel mean?

The term 7-panel refers to the configuration of the sewing pattern for a cap made with seven pieces of fabric sewn together (without the brim). This rather unique configuration has only one main pattern: the hybrid configuration.

The Hybrid configuration

7-panel caps use an hybrid configuration that merges the classic configuration and the arched configuration together. We can find typical triangular panels on the back while the front looks more like a jockey camper. This configuration features a mid to high profile and is generally structured.

Many 7-panel hats use a top button to bind the panels together above the cranium but we sometime see models without it. Below is an example of a custom classic 6-panel snapback cap using this configuration:

Note that although not detailed here, some type of jockey camper caps also use a 7-panel configuration with no change to the overall shape.
