What does Yarn mean?
The term yarn is often used in the clothing industry as it’s the material that is used to manufacture fabrics. It represents a continuous interlocked thread-like structure made of several natural or synthetic fibers.
There are two main methods to make yarn: Filament Yarn and Spun Yarn.
Filament Yarn
Fibers that are long enough that they can work themselves as yarn are called filament fibers. Since no twisting is needed to convert these fibers into yarn, they are sometimes referred to as simply filament yarn.
In general, the fibers labeled as filament are manmade in laboratories. For example, nylon and polyester are two such fibers that have long strands and are strong enough to be used directly as yarn for making fabrics.
A sewing thread (or simply a thread) is also a type of yarn that is essential to the confection of clothing. Although sewing threads are made by twisting multiple fibers together, wax is used to hold the staple fibers together which makes it feels like a single unified fiber.
Spun Yarn
In order to increase the strength and resistance of a yarn, you can combine two or more fibers and join them together by twisting them. This process is called spinning and allows the creation of a very strong yarn. Spun yarn may be created using a single type of fiber or it may combine different fibers together to create unique properties.
